I just read today that Magic Lantern has released a new firmware for the Canon Rebel T2i/EOS 550D.

Here’s a list of features:

Magic Lantern 0.2.0 for 550D firmware 1.0.9:

    * GUI menus: press the ERASE button to display them
    * Bit rate control (QScale parameter) for the H.264 encoder
    * Zebra stripes for overexposed / underexposed areas
    * Spotmeter, histogram
    * Cropmarks (16:9, Cinemascope, Fisheye)
    * Simple intervalometer
    * Trap Focus: camera takes a picture when something comes in focus
    * Wireless trigger with the LCD face sensor & your own hand
    * AE bracketing (like on 5D2 ML)
    * Rack focus
    * Stack focus (Live View only)
    * Lens data computation
    * Onscreen audio meters
    * Manual audio gain, selectable input source, disable AGC and
    digital filters
    * Display time remaining during video recording
    * Debug functions (display CMOS temperature, screenshot, logging)

This comes with a big WARNING!

THIS IS DANGEROUS PRE-ALPHA SOFTWARE. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK. IT WILL MODIFY YOUR CAMERA. NO WARRANTY. NO SUPPORT.

That being said, no one has had any issues at this time. This could void your warranty, however. Proceed with caution.

Las Noches de las Luminarias

Last Saturday night my wife, my parents and I went to the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix to see Las Noches de las Luminarias. It’s very pretty with the native desert plants being illuminated by more than 8,000 handlit luminaria bags.

Being who I am, recently re-energized in my filmmaking passion, I brought my Canon Rebel T2i with the 50mm f/1.8 lens, shot some footage and stills and put them to music.

Enjoy my little video Christmas card from Phoenix.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Phoenix Rain video on Vimeo

A few days ago, we got some rain. A lot of rain, actually. I was sitting in the living room, looking out the patio door and listening to the water drip and realized, “There’s a video to be made here!”.

So I grabbed my Canon Rebel T2i with my EF 50mm f/1.8 lens, went outside and started shooting.

Here is the result:

Thanks to my wife and Philip Bloom for getting me shooting more stuff.

Click over to the comments on Vimeo, or click the Twitter button to the right of this post, and let me know your thoughts.

Thanks again!

Good info for clients.

I just read this article which really explains video file container formats to clients (and co-workers).

The important bit is this:

.mov, .mkv, .avi and others are containers which mean they’re like sandwiches…

Read the article here.

Personally, I always liked the Christmas present analogy but to each their own.

Bloom’s Weekend Challenge 3 video

This past weekend I shot a short video for Philip Bloom’s Weekend Challenge 3. It’s really a great way to try some new or outside your usual comfort zone. It was fun to do and had some interesting challenges.

And so, without further ado, here is the video. Enjoy!
